Sometimes quotations taken from the text can provide us with information about the characters, setting or theme in a piece of literature. What do you think the following quotes tell us?
1. "Everyone said it was a pity that a slight pretty woman like Katie Nolan had to go out scrubbing floors. But what else could she do considering the husband she had, they said." (Smith 12)
2. "Francie knew that mama was a good woman. She knew. And papa said so. Then why did she like her father better than her mother? Why did she? Papa was no good. He said so himself. But she liked papa better. (Smith 35)

I think that these quotes show that a lot of judgement is passed on Francie's family, or at least her parents. They show that her father has earned a reputation as being "no good", but obviously Francie's mother doesn't mind, because she remains where she is.
Francie's mother is a described as a pretty lady so everyone expects Francie's father to do all of the work for her. Her father is considered "no good" because he is not quite ready to be a grown-up so he drinks to forget about it. Francie may feel a connection to him because not only does he love her (which her mother does not), but he is playful and child-like while her mother is serious.
